Essential Companion Ticket Policy

Burnley Mechanics work hard to be as accessible as we can within the restrictions of the building and budget viability. We try to make the experience we provide to our customers as welcoming and enjoyable as possible.  Working within a 160 year old building that has its main auditorium on the first floor, our policy is heavily informed by fire legislation.
This policy recognises people who are wheelchair users or recognised by the Department for Work and Pensions as requiring the enhanced rate of Personal Independence payment and therefore not capable of attending Mechanics events without an essential companion.

Our front room, lounge bar, theatre bar, loft and basement studio are completely accessible for visitors with disabilities. A lift to the first and second floor can be accessed via the lounge bar. The Basement studio has its own access at the back of the building.
With the need to evacuate using the goods lift and/or an evacuation chair in an emergency we can accommodate up to 2 wheelchair patrons in the main auditorium/theatre bar and 1 wheelchair patron in the loft.  This is directly informed by our risk assessment and agreed fire evacuation procedure that details our duty of care to both our patrons and staff.  We are able to be more flexible in the front room, lounge bar and basement studio because of the exit onto the street.
Any patron requiring an essential companion to attend the theatre to ensure their safe exit in an emergency evacuation needs to be incorporated into the fire risk assessment therefore up to four spaces will be allocated (in addition to the wheelchair allocation) next to the wheel chair spaces both in the theatre and loft.

A passenger lift is available from Foyer level to the Theatre and The Loft.  maximum capacity 8 persons.
Please note Burnley Mechanics is an old building and the lift can only accommodate one wheelchair patron and carer at any one time.

Patrons are encouraged to mention any accessibility requirements they have when booking – we will do our best to meet all requirements whilst ensuring our patrons are safe. Please note there is a slight gradient from the car part to the front entrance, if you are unable to get to the front entrance, therefore require lift access from the car park, please let the box office know at time of booking.

Assistant Dogs are welcome and water can be provided.
We endeavour to support people suffering from dementia, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to ensure you are greeted and taken to a quieter part of the theatre before a performance.

Essential Companion Tickets
For selected performances there is a limited allocation of tickets available for essential companions accompanying wheelchair users, the registered blind or patrons receiving Department of working Pensions, Enhanced Personal Independence Payments (PIPs). These are allocated on a first come first served basis and proof of eligibility will be required.

Please do not be offended if we ask for documentary evidence to show eligibility. To be eligible we will require:
• Evidence showing that you receive the enhanced rate of Personal Independence Payment.
• You will need to sit in the allocated spaces as they are placed directly next to the exit that leads to the disabled refuge. These are limited and will be booked on a first come first served basis.
• We require wheelchair users to stay in their wheelchairs next to their able bodied companion throughout the event to ensure safe evacuation in an emergency.
• The able bodied companion will be requested to assist should an emergency evacuation arise, therefore must be over the age of 16.
Please ask about Essential Companion tickets when booking. Some events will be exempt such as events where the ticket price includes food and/or drink etc (i.e. Theatre-Dinners, private hires).
Burnley Mechanics have a volunteering scheme so may be able to provide an assistant for those wanting to attend a concert alone, advance booking is essential, and we will need to check availability of our volunteers before we can confirm this service.

Facilities for the deaf and hearing impaired visitor
A Text phone service is available on 01282 425011.

There is an induction loop system in the main theatre. It works best in the tier using seats 20 – 23 on f-T and in the stalls using seats 22- 25 on rows C-E. The next best areas are seats 1-5 on both the tier and stalls.

Accessible toilets

There are accessible toilets on every floor of the Mechanics, these can be accessed using a standard issue Radar key. Although signposted please feel free to ask a member of our front of house of volunteer team if you need directions.

Car Park Access
There are disabled parking spaces in Victoria Street Car park at the back of the Mechanics building. If you require help with the gradient on Yorke Street up to the Mechanics please arrange assistance with the box office at time of booking.

Fire and Emergency
In the event of emergency, all essential carers are required to work with trained staff to facilitate a safe evacuation. Trained staff will inform and guide essential carers in terms of where to go.

Pre-show visits
If you or any of you party has a condition which would benefit from a visit prior to the performance you are attending, we will do our best to accommodate such requests.

First aid
If you require assistance at any time during your visit, please contact a member of the Front of house Team.
Strobe or similar effects
Strobe Lighting or similar effects may be used during performances at Burnley Mechanics. If Patrons have concerns about what lighting may be used please ask a member of the front of house team. Signs are put up for shows that contain it and announcements are made prior to the show.
